I recently bought a Reynold Boughton RB44. It was originally built in 1992 as a military light transport truck and was based on the old Dodge 50 series civilian 5.5 tonne truck.
As with many ex military trucks it has very low mileage, only 8000 miles. Unfortunately the body is showing it's age. The original paint is thick and brittle so it tends to peel off in sheets.
The plan is to do it up and potentially turn it into a 4x4 expedition vehicle.
There aren't many modern 4x4 trucks at around 5 - 7 tonne gross weight. Here in the UK the only options are the Fuso Canter 4x4 which doesn't have low range so it's basically the soft roader of 4x4 trucks and the Iveco Daily 4x4.
The Daily is a good contender but they are even harder to find than RB44s and spares are eye wateringly expensive. I could buy 2 decent RB44s for less than the price of a new replacement Iveco transfer box. They also have a reputation for unreliability. RB44s also have a bit of a bad reputation in that area but at least most things can be fixed with a hammer and a few spanners.
Here is a picture of the truck shortly after I bought it. It needs quite a bit of work and modifications before it is suitable to use as an expedition truck.
Externally it doesn't look too bad but as is so often the case, it does have a bit of a tinworm infection in the body. The chassis and running gear are in excellent condition. First task is to fix that tin worm
Now it gets more interesting. There are quite a few modifications I want to do to the chassis.
